I won’t go into too much detail here with the exact ins and outs of what do.
Next you need to download a file called Letterbomb, copy it to your (formatted) SD card and you are ready to get started. If you follow this you should be fine but there is always a risk that you could damage your Wii so don’t blame me, you have been warned!! Its important here to set to the exact time and date. The next thing to do is erase all the crap off of your Wii, restore to factory settings and ensure that you are updated to the most recent firmware via the system preferences. Also, as I recently found out, the ScummVM emulator only supports the Game Cube controller so this option would get my vote. The advantage of the Game Cube controller is that it plugs straight into the Wii therefore no issues with battery life etc. Then either get yourself a GameCube controller or an official Wii game pad. It even supports Apple ones which is very cool. You will also need to grab an old keyboard and mouse. I got mine for 9.99 with all leads and x2 controllers. This means you can pick them up on eBay for next to nothing. The best thing is is that you don’t need the disc drive to work.
In this review/guide I thought I would briefly explain how I went about getting the emulators to run on the Wii and whether overall it’s a good way of playing old games. They are dirt cheap to pick up, they have an SD card slot built in, wifi and the capability to add a mouse, keyboard and game pad. I know there are a few systems around that offer what I’m after but I liked the idea of using a Wii as when I looked into it, there were lots of benefits. My gaming space or ‘man cave’ as my wife calls it would be complete.
Due to a lack of space I had previously resorted to running them on a PSP but this time I wanted an actual system that could be plugged into an old CRT TV. For a while I had been on the look out for a system that can run multiple emulators. It was Swainy from the the Retro Asylum who first told me it was possible.
